|TURMERIC (Curcuma longa)||Turmeric is a spice and a herb that has been used for centuries in Ayurvedic (a 5000 year old holistic system from India) and Chinese medicine. Turmeric belongs to the ginger family (Zingiberaceae). Turmeric has a distinct yellow color, is traditionally used as a spice in Indian cooking and is used to enhance the color of mustard in western countries. It is considered to be a super-food. The active compound in Turmeric is Curcumin; it is comparable to phenylbutazone. Studies have shown Turmeric to be an excellent anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-fungal, antibacterial, anticoagulant, antiseptic, and astringent. It has also been shown to help with liver function, bile production and externally for wound healing. Curcumin is beneficial for arthritic conditions due to the anti-inflammatory properties and the effect on lipoxygenase inhabitation. Turmeric contains several anti-inflammatory compounds and COX2 inhibitors. The anticancer benefits are due to its antioxidant properties, in which turmeric extracts can scavenge free radicals, increase antioxidant enzymes, and inhibit lipid peroxidation. Epidemiological studies have linked the frequent use of turmeric to lower rates of mammary, lung, colon, and liver cancers. Laboratory experiments have shown that Turmeric can prevent tumors from forming. It is helpful for autoimmune diseases. Curcuminoids are considered hepatoprotective as they increase the detoxification of the liver.|
|BLACK PEPPER (Piper nigrum)||Black pepper is commonly referred to as the "King of Spices", and is highly valued for its flavor, aroma, and nutritional value in cooking. It is a well known antioxidant with antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, antipyretic, rubefacient and cholesterol lowering properties. Black pepper is also useful to promote digestion. The active principle in black pepper is piperine; it has demonstrated in invitro studies to protect against oxidative damage by inhibiting free radicals, and is beneficial against oxidative stress. In animal studies, rats fed a high fat diet and treated with black pepper showed a decrease in the levels of cholesterol, free fatty acids, phospholipids and triglycerides. Black pepper contains mainly vitamins A, C, E, K, niacin and beta-carotene; and traces of minerals such as iron, calcium, phosphorous. Black pepper also contains amino acids, which enhance the bioavailability of other nutrients. These amino acids have also been used in anti-microbial and anti-bacterial applications.|
