BARBERRY (Berberis vulgaris) Barberry has traditionally been used to treat diarrhea, relieve stomach upsets and to reduce stomach acid. Studies have shown that barberry improves symptoms of diarrhea faster than antibiotics, possibly because it has astringent and antibiotic properties. The antibiotic properties are thought to be effective at killing bacteria in the intestines. Barberry has high content of isoquinoline alkaloids (mainly berberine and berbamine), which have demonstrated antibiotic, antioxidant, astringent, immunostimulatory, carminative and sedative activities. It is also beneficial for reducing inflammation and infection of urinary and gastrointestinal tracts.
MULLEIN (Verbascum thapsus) Mullein has astringent, antibiotic, antispasmodic, mucilaginous, analgesic, antimicrobial, antiseptic, expectorant and antiviral properties. The soothing, protective actions are effective for abdominal and intestinal cramps and diarrhea. The mucilage forms a protective barrier on the intestinal mucosa and counteracts inflammatory irritations. The antibiotic properties help fight diarrhea causing bacteria while the antispasmodic action helps relieve stomach cramps.
BAYBERRY (Myrica cerifera) Bayberry contains tannins, resins and gums that control bacterial infection. It also possesses astringent properties and contains myricadiol, tritperpenes, and flavaonoids that help strengthen and resist infections. The myricadiols help with potassium and sodium levels. It is a circulatory stimulant and a diaphoretic. Bayberry is traditionally used to treat diarrhea, dysentery, and colitis.
MYRRH (Commiphora molmol) The active compounds of Myrrh are terpenoids and sesquiterpenes, both of which have anti- inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Myrrh strengthens and activates the immune system, helps protect against microbial infection, and also helps reduce pain and swelling. Myrrh has carminative properties, expels intestinal gas, and relieves spasms and overall digestive discomfort.
THYME (Thymus vulgaris) Thyme is a popular culinary herb, which also has many medicinal benefits. It helps detoxify the body by removing waste through the liver. It is a great immune system booster that encourages white blood cell formation while increasing resistance to foreign organisms. Due to the carminative and antispasmodic properties, thyme has traditionally been used for IBD and colitis. It also has astringent, antiseptic, anti-fungal, antimicrobial, antibacterial, antispasmodic properties and helps expel intestinal gas as well as expelling intestinal worms.
CHAMOMILE (Matricaria chamomilla) Chamomile has been used for centuries as a digestive tonic. It helps expel gas, reduce vomiting caused by IBD, and is helpful with indigestion; it eases nervous spasms, improves bile production and reduces inflammation. Chamomile has been used for the treatment of chronic or acute gastric disorders and IBD. It is an excellent calming agent with sedative, immunostimulating, antispasmodic, antiseptic, analgesic, counterirritant, vasodilator, hemostatic, tonic and antimicrobial properties. Chamomile's volatile oils, flavonoids, and lactones, provide anti-inflammatory action to help soothe and heal the digestive tract and stimulate digestion.
CHINESE PEONY (Paeonia obovata) Chinese Peony is used in traditional Chinese medicine for enriching the blood and supporting the liver. It helps relieve pain associated with the stomach and abdomen. It is an antibacterial, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic and tonic that relaxes spasms.
GINGER (Zingiber officinale) The enzymes in Ginger encourage the production of gastric juices required for digestion. It helps reduce muscle contractions of the bowel, which help eliminate waste without causing discomfort. It is a stimulant, antispasmodic, antipyretic, carminative, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant herb. It relieves pain, stimulates circulation, expels internal gas, improves peristalsis and intestinal muscle tone, helps with colic, reduces nausea and vomiting and inhibits platelet aggregation.
OREGON GRAPE (Mahonia aquifolium) An antimicrobial, anti-parasitic tonic that helps combat various forms of fungal and bacterial infections. Oregon Grape has a high content of isoquinoline alkaloids (mainly berberine and berbamine) resins and tannins, which have demonstrated antibiotic, immunostimulatory and sedative activities. An anti-inflammatory with strong affinities to the liver, digestive system and mucous membranes, it stimulates bile production and helps relieve indigestion and malabsorption.
